  54. Part 1: GENERAL NOTES
  55. =====================

  57. 1.1  Removing other pointing device software programs 
  58.      before installing IntelliPoint software.
  59.  
  60.      Installing IntelliPoint when other pointing device 
  61.      software programs are still installed on your system may 
  62.      cause problems. It is recommended that you completely 
  63.      uninstall all other pointing device software programs 
  64.      before installing IntelliPoint software.
  65.  
  66. 1.2  Using the PS/2 port on your laptop computer
  67.  
  68.      Many laptop computers have an internal (PS/2) pointing 
  69.      device (IPD) that may cause your mouse or trackball 
  70.      to work erratically or improperly when attached to 
  71.      the PS/2 port. The problem is most likely because 
  72.      both the IPD and your mouse or trackball are trying 
  73.      to use the PS/2 port at the same time.
  74.  
  75.      To fix this problem, try one of the following:
  76.  
  77.      *  Disable the IPD or select Autodetect mode, using 
  78.         the BIOS setup program. Not all laptop computers 
  79.         have this feature. See your laptop computer's 
  80.         documentation to change settings with your BIOS 
  81.         setup program.
  82.      *  If your pointing device is serial compatible, connect it 
  83.         to an available serial port.
  84.      *  If your pointing device has USB-to-PS/2 functionality, 
  85.         remove the USB-to-PS/2 adapter, and then plug 
  86.         the USB connector into an available USB port.
  87.  
  88. 1.3  Upgrading your operating system
  89.  
  90.      When you upgrade your operating system to a later version, 
  91.      you must first uninstall the IntelliPoint software before 
  92.      upgrading, and then, after upgrading, reinstall the 
  93.      IntelliPoint software. If you do not reinstall the 
  94.      IntelliPoint software, some features may not work or may 
  95.      not work as expected.

  98. 1.4  Replacing a two-button pointing device with a pointing 
  99.      device with a wheel
  100.  
  101.      When you replace your two-button pointing device with a 
  102.      pointing device with a wheel, you need to install the 
  103.      accompanying IntelliPoint software to fully enable the 
  104.      wheel and wheel button functionality. If you install 
  105.      your pointing device without installing the IntelliPoint 
  106.      software, the wheel and wheel button may not work.
  107.  
  108.      NOTE: When you replace your two-button pointing device 
  109.      with a pointing device with a wheel, you may not see a 
  110.      message informing you of new hardware installed when 
  111.      you restart your computer.
  112.  
  113.      >>>To fix this problem:
  114.  
  115.      1  Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then 
  116.         click Control Panel.
  117.      2  Double-click System, click the Device Manager tab, 
  118.         and then click Mouse.
  119.      3  Select the serial device, for example Standard 
  120.         Serial Mouse, and then click Remove.
  121.      4  Restart your computer.
  122.      
  123.      If your computer does not detect your device after 
  124.      restarting, try running Setup.exe on your IntelliPoint 
  125.      CD-ROM.
  126.

  128. 1.5  Connecting multiple pointing devices to your computer
  129.  
  130.      Button assignments are the same for all devices 
  131.      connected to your computer. For example, if you 
  132.      assign Click to the secondary button for one device, 
  133.      then Click is assigned to the secondary button for 
  134.      all devices.
  135.  
  136.      NOTE: If you assign Click to a button that is not 
  137.      available on another device, then you cannot use 
  138.      that other device to Click.
  139.  
  140. 1.6  Known problems with scrolling
  141.  
  142.      Microsoft endeavored to provide scrolling in all 
  143.      applications; however, some applications may 
  144.      encounter difficulties.
  145.  
  146.      *  Some applications enable you to scroll only when 
  147.         the pointer is placed over a scroll bar. When you 
  148.         attempt to scroll by rolling the wheel inside the 
  149.         window, nothing happens. In these applications, 
  150.         place the pointer over a scroll bar, and then roll 
  151.         the wheel.
  152.  
  153.      *  Some applications enable you to AutoScroll or pan 
  154.         only when the pointer is placed over a scroll 
  155.         bar. When you attempt to AutoScroll or pan by 
  156.         clicking the wheel button inside the window, 
  157.         an origin mark may appear, but does not enable 
  158.         you to AutoScroll or pan. In these applications, 
  159.         place the pointer over one of the scroll bars, 
  160.         and then click the wheel button.
  161.  
  162.      *  You may not be able to scroll, AutoScroll, and pan 
  163.         in all windows of some applications.
  164.  
  165.      *  Some applications provide an option to hide scroll 
  166.         bars. Scrolling may not work when this option is 
  167.         applied. To restore scrolling in this instance, 
  168.         restore the scroll bars within the application.
  169.  
  170.      *  Some applications may not AutoScroll or pan with 
  171.         SnapTo selected. When you attempt to AutoScroll or 
  172.         pan, the origin mark disappears and becomes a pointer 
  173.         over the default button. To AutoScroll and pan in 
  174.         these applications, turn off SnapTo in the 
  175.         IntelliPoint software.
  176.  
  177.  
  178. 1.7  Using the wheel in windows with multiple scroll bars
  179.  
  180.      Windows that contain frames can have multiple scroll 
  181.      bars that may require you to click the content within 
  182.      the window to activate scrolling with the wheel. A 
  183.      frame is a separate, scrolling area within the window.
  184.  
  185.      For example, when using Microsoft Internet Explorer, 
  186.      if your window contains multiple frames with scroll 
  187.      bars, you may need to click the content of the window 
  188.      to activate scrolling with the wheel.
  189.  
  190.  
  191. 1.8  Reassigning features to buttons that programs cannot 
  192.      recognize
  193.  
  194.      When you assign a different feature to a mouse or 
  195.      trackball button, for example AutoScroll instead of 
  196.      Click to the primary button, then the button will 
  197.      work as the new feature (AutoScroll), not the default 
  198.      feature (Click).
  199.  
  200.      If your program does not recognize the new feature 
  201.      assigned to a button, in this case AutoScroll 
  202.      assigned to the primary button, then the button may 
  203.      not operate as expected in that program. You must 
  204.      assign a feature to a button that the program can 
  205.      recognize for the button to operate as expected.
  206.  
  207. 1.9  Using a BIOS setup program to enable your mouse port
  208.  
  209.      If you enable your PS/2 mouse port using a BIOS 
  210.      setup program, your computer will detect a PS/2 device 
  211.      when you use Add New Hardware, even without a PS/2 
  212.      device connected. When your computer detects a 
  213.      nonexistent pointing device, you will see an 
  214.      exclamation point beside the PS/2 Mouse icon in the 
  215.      Device Manager tab in the Control Panel.
  216.  
  217.      >>>To display the PS/2 Mouse icon:
  218.  
  219.      1  Click the Start button, point to Settings, and 
  220.         then click Control Panel.
  221.      2  Double-click System, click the Device Manager 
  222.         tab, and then click Mouse.

  224.      To avoid this problem, do not enable your mouse 
  225.      port using your BIOS setup program.
  226.  
  227.  
  228. 1.10 Determining the IntelliPoint software version number
  229.  
  230.      You can easily determine what version of IntelliPoint 
  231.      software is installed on your computer.
  232.  
  233.      >>>To display the IntelliPoint software version number:
  234.  
  235.      1  Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to 
  236.         Microsoft Hardware, point to Mouse, and then click 
  237.         IntelliPoint.
  238.      2  On any tab with "Microsoft IntelliPoint" on the 
  239.         bottom right corner, right-click within the text areas, and 
  240.         then click About.
  241.  
  242. 1.11 Registering your product after installing 
  243.      IntelliPoint software
  244.  
  245.      You can only register your product when you install the
  246.      IntelliPoint software. If you choose to register your
  247.      product at a later time during the installation of 
  248.      IntelliPoint software, you must reinstall the 
  249.      IntelliPoint software, and then complete the 
  250.      Registration Wizard to register your product.
  251.  
  252. 1.12 Using the Registration Wizard requires a modem and 
  253.      an Internet connection.
  254.  
  255.      If you plan on registering your product during setup,
  256.      you must have a modem installed and configured 
  257.      properly and an Internet connection. Otherwise, the 
  258.      Registration Wizard will not be able to send your 
  259.      data to Microsoft Product Registration. If you want 
  260.      to register your product but could not do so during 
  261.      registration because you did not have a modem installed 
  262.      or an internet connection, see 1.11 above.

  265. Part 2: NOTES FOR WINDOWS NT USERS
  266. ==================================
  267.  
  268. 2.1  Installing IntelliPoint requires system-administrator 
  269.      security privileges
  270.  
  271.      You need system-administrator security privileges to 
  272.      install IntelliPoint software on Windows NT systems. 
  273.      For information on system-administrator security, see 
  274.      your Windows NT documentation.
  275.  
  276.  
  277. 2.2  Using an IntelliMouse Trackball or a dedicated PS/2 
  278.      IntelliMouse on Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3
  279.  
  280.      IntelliPoint must be installed to use the wheel or 
  281.      wheel button on Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3. You may 
  282.      have a dedicated PS/2 IntelliMouse if you purchased 
  283.      it from an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
  284.  
  285.      To fix this problem, install IntelliPoint.
  286.
